Entropy coding techniques such as arithmetic coding are well-known and commonly used in many compression algorithms including all modern video coding standards. UNC is developing rated sorted entropy coding that improves upon existing methods. The UNC approach can be applied to existing standardized video compression schemes that rely on arithmetic encoding without having to fully decode and re-encode (i.e., transcode) the original stream making it a computationally efficient manner for adapting a high quality, high bandwidth video stream into a lower quality, lower bandwidth stream. Applications include video streaming on demand, distributed video archiving, and other distributed multimedia applications that make use of video adaptation.
