The UNC innovation is polymer chemistry for synthesizing ion-selective membranes (anion and cation exchange membranes) that increase the number of hydrogen bonding sites inside the polymer. The addition of hydrogen bonding sites can dramatically increase the conductivity of the membrane without substantially changing its selectivity. This behavior is in contrast to conventional membranes, which exhibit a tradeoff relationship between high selectivity and high conductivity.
